Running a pub has been a long held ambition of Irishman Owen O'Sullivan and his partner Lisa O'Brien so when the tenancy of her local, the Timothy Taylor owned
Cross Inn at Heptonstall, became available they jumped at the opportunity.
Lisa, who hails from just down the road in Mytholmroyd, explained: "I've worked in pubs most of my working life and have been a regular at the Cross for a number of years and helped out behind the bar on occasions. When Roy and Pat had to leave for personal reasons they suggested we take it on. Heptonstall is such a great village, how could we resist!"
Owen, who is originally from County Clare, couldn't wait to give up his job in construction near London to move north. "Through Lisa I've grown to love this part of the world and this way of life", he said. "Now I've committed myself not only to the pub but also to Lisa for we're getting married in April. We're in this for the long term!"
The couple want to keep the pub at the heart of village life by offering a friendly welcome and traditional pub games including darts, dominoes and pool - the pool team is currently top of their league and with just 4 matches to play has every intention of being crowned champions. Tuesday night is quiz night and on most weekends there's a different live band playing an eclectic mix of music. Karaoke and Mr and Mrs competitions are also on the cards.
As well as all five Timothy Taylor beers, classical, freshly prepared pub food is served every day from 12 noon to 3pm and 5pm to 7pm with a traditional roast every Sunday.
Timothy Taylor's Tied Estate Manager Andrew Daykin commented: "Owen and Lisa are so enthusiastic and friendly I'm sure the locals will warm to them and they'll make a huge success of running the Cross. Everyone at the brewery is behind them."
