At Timothy Taylor's, every pint we serve is the result of years of brewing heritage, care, and attention to detail. From our Knowle Spring water to our use of whole leaf hops, quality is built into every stage of the process. The final step, the pour, can be just as important as the brew itself and for us, that pour should include a sparkler.
What is a sparkler?
A beer sparkler is a small, perforated nozzle fitted to the end of a hand pull spout. As beer is drawn through it, the beer is forced through tiny holes, aerating the beer and creating a tight, creamy head.
Rather than a smooth stream, the beer is dispersed into fine bubbles, producing a pint with a dense, lasting head and creating that distinctive cascading settle in the glass.
By breaking the beer into fine bubbles, the sparkler refines the texture, delivering the smooth, rounded mouthfeel our beers are known for.
Our beers are carefully balanced malt, hops, yeast and Knowle Spring water working in harmony. The sparkler helps bring these elements together, releasing aromatic flavours and aromas which heighten the expectation of a great pint even before the first taste.

Why We Use a Sparkler for A Proper Pint of Timothy Taylor’s
For us, it goes further than regional tradition. It is fundamental to the identity of our beer in the glass. Timothy Taylor’s Landlord is brewed for clarity and balance and the sparkler completes that experience by creating the iconic tight, creamy head, delivering a smooth, polished finish, showcasing the beer’s condition and freshness. This isn’t about changing the beer. It’s about presenting it at its absolute best.
The debate around sparklers has existed for decades but at Timothy Taylor’s, our position is clear. We champion the sparkler because it is how our beer should be served. It reflects our heritage, our brewing intent, and our standards. It’s not just a piece of equipment; it’s part of the craft.
The Mark of a Well-Poured Pint
There’s one final detail, you’ll often notice a delicate pattern left behind on the inside of the glass, where the head has gently clung with each sip. This is known as lacing.
A well-formed lacing is a sign of a properly poured pint. It reflects good condition, the right level of natural carbonation, and the tight, creamy head created by serving through a sparkler.
Each ring tells a story of balance and care, a visual reminder that the beer has been served exactly as it should be.
A Delicate Balance
The stability of the head is influenced not only by the beer and the sparkler pour. Sometimes the oils and waxes present in foods or lip balms could interfere with the foam structure, causing the head to dissipate more quickly than usual. This is simply something to be aware of and should not reflect on the quality of the beer, but rather on the delicate balance that supports a lasting foam.
Our Head Brewer’s Perspective:

"At Timothy Taylor’s, we brew our beers expecting them to be served through a sparkler" says Andy Leman. "It defines the texture, the appearance and the way the flavours come together in the glass. With it, you get that signature creamy head, smooth mouthfeel and balanced character that makes a proper pint of Taylor’s."
